Ryan Goes Home to Cheers in Wisconsin

Tuesday, 26 April 2011 04:38 PM EDT

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — Congressional Republicans are getting mixed reviews as they pitch their budget plan to constituents back home.

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan was greeted Tuesday by a supportive, standing-room-only crowd of about 200 people in Lake Geneva, Wis. But in Orlando, Fla., freshman U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster faced heckling, boos and shouting matches between supporters and opponents during an hour-long meeting.

Some of the roughly 300 people in Orlando wore stickers that said "Hands off Social Security." Webster defended the budget blueprint authored by Ryan that would cut social safety-net programs such as food stamps and Medicaid.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, was holding four events Tuesday. Some attendees had concerns that went beyond federal deficits and the budget, asking Ryan about local jobs and the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
