Gingrich Hoping New 'Contract' Keeps Bid Alive

Wednesday, 28 September 2011 07:53 PM EDT

ATLANTA (AP) — A floundering presidential bid has fractured what was once Newt Gingrich's rock star image among Republicans.

Not long ago he was sitting atop a lucrative political empire as their sought-after intellectual guru. Now he's all but broke and traveling coach.

American Solutions was his vaunted political operation. That's gone under. And he finds he's fighting for air time — if not respect — at Republican presidential primary debates.

On Thursday, Gingrich will try to prove he's still a player by rolling out a "21st Century Contract with America." That's what he's calling the campaign manifesto he hopes will evoke his glory days of the 1990s. That's when he sat at the helm of the Republican revolution, when the GOP won the House and he won the speakership.
