Friday, 13 May 2011 06:59 AM EDT

ALBANY, N.Y. — Caroline Kennedy, once a challenger for one of New York's U.S. Senate seats, has signed onto a national effort to support gay marriage as the cause is focusing on New York.

Kennedy is the 100,000th signer of a letter to President Obama to support legalizing gay marriage nationwide. She is one of several celebrities to sign. Others include actors Martin Sheen and Jane Lynch, civil rights activist Julian Bond and the co-founders of Twitter and Facebook.

The New York effort is using the support to bolster its push to legalize gay marriage. The $1 million effort seeks the Legislature's approval by the end of the session June 20.
