Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s lead in the race for president over Republican rival John McCain is at its highest point to date, according to a new Gallup Poll.
The poll, which tracked voter preference from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1, shows 50 percent of national registered voters now favor Obama for president, while 42 percent back John McCain.
The eight percentage point lead Obama has over McCain is slightly higher than the 49 percent to 42 percent lead he had last month, but is one point shy of the lead he held over McCain in late July after returning from his much-touted trip to Europe and the Middle East.
McCain's 42 percent share of voters polled in the new Gallup Poll is lower than the 48 percent top support level he recorded in late April/early May. In July, McCain garnered a little more than 40 percent of the vote, and during the Democratic National Convention held last week, he polled at 41 percent.
