For the most part, President Obama has been more useful in this campaign to Republican candidates – as a piñata – than to Democrats. But a few Democrats are connecting themselves to the unpopular president, using him in ads to inspire the party base, particularly African-Americans, Politico reports.

democrats, obama, coat, tailsObama appears in an ad for Louisiana congressional candidate Cedric Richmond, extolling the state representative for “making a difference for the community.” The president says in the ad, “New Orleans needs Cedric Richmond in Congress, and so do I.”

In Florida, Obama has expressed his support for Rep. Kendrick Meek’s Senate campaign.

Meek is a “powerful voice for Floridians,” Obama says, adding “If we work together, he will win.”

Obama also speaks in radio aids for the re-election campaign of Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. O’Malley makes “the tough decisions to put education, safety and job creation first,” Obama says.

Gallup puts Obama’s approval rating at only 46 percent.
