House Democrats are using none other than former President Ronald Reagan in a political ad accusing Republicans of being out of line in the ongoing debt ceiling fight, according to
Politico.
On Tuesday, Democrats released a one-minute video Tuesday with audio clips of a radio address from Reagan on Sept. 26, 1987. In it, the Gipper blamed Congress for repeatedly pushing the United States “to the edge of default before facing its responsibility.”
“The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations,” Reagan said in the address. He warned of rising interest rates, unpaid Social Security and military checks and market instability if the government didn’t pay off its bills.
“It could not be put more bluntly or more articulately than [how] Ronald Reagan laid it out,” said Rep. John Larson, chairman of the Democratic Caucus, adding that the debt ceiling was raised in the Reagan administration 17 times “without the taking of any hostages.”
The campaign is called “That’s an Adult Moment,” and it’s with those words that the video ends.
