Republican Field Expecting a Perry Candidacy

Thursday, 11 August 2011 10:28 PM EDT

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry wasn't on the debate stage, but the Republican field is certainly expecting him.

Republican presidential candidates were asked about the expected Perry candidacy during Thursday's debate in Iowa.

Texas congressman Ron Paul said he was "pleased" Perry was joining the field "because he represents the status quo." Businessman Herman Cain called Perry "one more politician."

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman joked that "we all need prayers" and said he hoped Perry was praying for the GOP field.

Perry plans to discuss his intentions to run for president on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire.
