Conservatives Winning Ad Wars on Debt Debate

By    |   Sunday, 24 July 2011 09:28 AM EDT

Conservative groups are drubbing the Democrats in the commercial wars playing out as politicians in Washington battle over proposals to address the debt-ceiling controversy.

“The thing that liberals never understand is that the person who defines the game, wins the game and these moves right now are the game-defining moves,” Erica Payne, president of a donor-advisory group called the Agenda Project, told Politico.

Although it’s an impossible task to tally spending numbers at this point, Politico notes that anecdotal information, along with interviews of political operatives, media buyers, and trackers, indicates that conservatives are spending five to 10 times more than their liberal counterparts on TV and radio advertising involving the debt debates.

The conservative commercial pitches vary, but the common threads are that President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats have spent recklessly without improving the economy has done little to boost the flagging economy and that they just want to raise raise taxes and the debt ceiling instead of tackling the underlying issues.

Outpacing all comers is Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, also known as Crossroads GPS, a nonprofit group that Karl Rove helped found last year. Crossroads is spending $20 million in July and August on ads attacking Democrats and urging voters to “take away Obama’s blank check.”
