McCain, Rubio, 2 Others Travel to Libya

Thursday, 29 September 2011 06:43 AM EDT

WASHINGTON  — Four Republican senators are traveling to Libya to meet with the country's new leaders in Tripoli. It's the highest profile U.S. delegation to visit Libya since the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi last month.

The senators are to arrive Thursday and meet with members of the National Transitional Council, which is now governing the country. They also planned to tour Martyrs' Square.

The four senators are John McCain of Arizona, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Marco Rubio of Florida and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

McCain, one of the first lawmakers to call for U.S. support for anti-Gadhafi forces, visited the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in April.

Leaders of Britain, France and Turkey have traveled to Libya in recent weeks. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman also has visited Benghazi.
