WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-led House has moved to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate greenhouse gases in a vote largely negated by Senate action a day earlier to defeat such a repeal.
The bill would reject findings that climate change caused by greenhouse gases endangers human health and rescind the EPA's authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate such emissions.
The Senate defeated an identical bill Wednesday. Even with Senate approval, the White House said the legislation would be subject to a veto.
House Republicans have cast the EPA's effort to regulate greenhouse gases as an obvious example of government overreach and have made overturning the EPA authority a cornerstone of their anti-regulatory campaign. EPA's authority is also an issue in negotiations to avoid a government shutdown.
