Coburn: Senate Will Thwart Obamacare

By    |   Thursday, 05 November 2009 08:50 PM EST

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., says the House will pass a healthcare bill this year, but that the Senate won’t.

In a recent speech, Coburn, who is a doctor, also voiced his opposition to Democratic reform plans.

“We’re not listening to the American people as a whole,” he said. “If you’re sick, I don’t care whether you have insurance or not, this is the best place in the world to get sick. The thing that limits access is cost. But if you’re sick, we look past the cost and try to treat.”

Coburn says we need to improve prevention strategy.

“But we shouldn’t fail to recognize that three out of every four innovations in healthcare come out of this country. . . . If you have acute anything in this country, you’re going to have the best outcome on average, far above anywhere else in the world.”

The House’s healthcare bill goes against three key tenets of medicine, Coburn says:

  • If you listen to the patient they will tell you what is wrong;

  • Do no harm;

  • If it’s already been tried, don’t do it again.

    Still, “there is no question they will pass this in the House,” he said.

    “We haven’t seen the combination bills that are being put together in the Senate, but there is no question they will be just as thick and just as onerous.”

    The good news: “It’s my estimation that no bill will come through the Senate this year,” Coburn says.

    “Any bill that affects one-sixth of our economy, that has the tremendous changes in structure to our society that this bill does has to be fully aired in the Senate. We have every intention to use every parliamentary maneuver to make sure that the American people . . . know exactly what’s in it.”
