A CNN poll released Tuesday shows real estate mogul Donald Trump and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in a first-place tie when Republicans are asked who they support for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.
Trump jumped from 10 percent in a
CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey conducted last month to 19 percent in the current poll, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney dropping from 18 percent to 11 percent.
In Tuesday’s poll, 19 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they would most likely support Trump, with an equal amount backing Huckabee. Twelve percent support former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin; Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich each get 11 percent; 7 percent are behind Texas Rep. Ron Paul; and 5 percent support Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.
The poll was conducted in the two days before Romney's Monday announcement that he was setting up a presidential exploratory committee. It was done by telephone, with 824 people questioned, and its overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
