Happy Birthday, Mr. President: Vegan Bill Clinton Is 65 Today

By    |   Friday, 19 August 2011 04:24 PM EDT

Former President Bill Clinton has made a concerted effort to live a healthy lifestyle since undergoing quadruple bypass surgery in 2004. And now he has gone vegan, meaning he won’t eat any animal products.

Clinton was famous for gorging on junk food in the White House. But he’s turned over a new leaf, the president tells Dr. Sanjay Gupta in an interview to air on CNN Sunday. "I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now," Clinton said, noting that he avoids meat, dairy, and eggs.

The diet has helped him lose 20 pounds. Of his health in 2004, Clinton said, "I was lucky I did not die of a heart attack."

As it is, the diet also helped the former president celebrate his 65th birthday, which is today, Aug. 19.
