John McCain’s wife, Cindy, was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., Wednesday after greeting an enthusiastic supporter with a handshake resulted in her aggravating a pre-existing carpal tunnel injury, FOX News reports.
“Someone grabbed her hand really hard and then someone else was pulling her the other way,” explained Jill Hazelbaker, a McCain spokeswoman who accompanied the Republican presidential candidate’s wife at a fundraiser in West Bloomfield.
Doctors at the hospital took X-rays of McCain, who has had surgeries in the past to alleviate the carpal tunnel syndrome she suffers from, and determined that she merely sprained her wrist during the brief encounter.
“Out of an abundance of caution, she decided to leave the event and visit the local hospital for X-rays where she was treated for a minor sprain,” Hazelbaker told FOX News. “We appreciate everyone’s concern, and she will be back on the campaign trail tomorrow.”
