Christie, Thune Try to Shore Up Romney in Iowa

Tuesday, 27 December 2011 04:35 PM EST

Mitt Romney is finally kicking his Iowa campaign into high gear with big name help from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and South Dakota Sen. Jim Thune.

Romney, who has made only sporadic visits to Iowa so far, begins his push with a speech on the economy and the need for an “opportunity society” late Tuesday afternoon in Davenport, according to the New York Daily News.

“An opportunity society is one where the government stops tying the hands of the private sector with excessive regulation and taxation,” Romney consultant David Kochel told the Des Moines Register.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, will not be alone in his Iowa campaign drive. Nearly the entire field of Republican contenders is expected to blitz the state in the coming days.

An Iowa State University poll released last week showed upstart Rep. Ron Paul of Texas with a narrow lead over former House speaker Newt Gingrich, 28% to 25%.

Romney was third at 18%.
