While many political observers continue to obsess over whether Chris Christie will run for president, the Republican New Jersey governor addressed a more timely topic with these marching orders: Irene’s gone, the water’s fine, so get back to the beach to stimulate business.
Christie repeatedly has spurned suggestions that he might run for president or even vice president. Indeed, he has been especially firm in rejecting the idea of being a vice president, noting that he couldn’t imagine a president being able to put up with his feistiness.
Oh, he’s flattered with the attention, recently telling an interviewer at a
Philadelphia radio station: "I'm a kid from Jersey who has people asking him to run for president. I'm thrilled by it," he said. "I just don't want to do it."
Even so, former George W. Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson stirred the speculation again during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
"I don't think Republicans regard this as a strong field," Gerson said. "So there is still talk of people getting in the race. Not just [Sarah] Palin but last week, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey was in Chicago and had two meetings with serious Republican groups from the Midwest."
As for Christie? Well, this is Labor Day weekend, and he’s all about helping his state recover from the blow of Tropical Storm Irene last weekend. While acknowledging that much remains to be done, he urges folks to head to the beach to help businesses there recover:
