A Twitter message from the Washington Post political blog The Fix strongly suggested the newspaper reporters found a remark by fast-rising GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain to be laughable. The exchange occurred as Bloomberg White House correspondent Julianna Goldman challenged Cain’s contention that his 9-9-9 tax reform is revenue neutral.
Her question: “Last year the U.S. collected 2.2 trillion in tax revenue. But Bloomberg government has run the numbers, and your plan would raise no more than 2 trillion dollars. And even with that shortfall, you’d still be slapping a 9 percent sales tax on food and medicine.”
Cain’s response, which the Washington Post staff found so humorous: “The problem with that analysis is that it is incorrect.”
The GOP crowd in New Hampshire laughed heartily, and approvingly, at Cain’s riposte. Cain went on to explain his new tax code would expand the tax base, increasing revenue collections.
The Twitter post from The Fix suggested reporters in the Washington Post found Cain’s statement amusing as well – but perhaps in a different sense.
That message: “Cascading laughs in WaPo newsroom to this from Cain: ‘The problem with that analysis is that it's incorrect.’"
