Boehner Takes Wait-and-See Tack on Obama Speech

By    |   Thursday, 08 September 2011 03:22 PM EDT

Many Republicans have criticized the points President Barack Obama is expected to make in his speech Thursday night. But House Speaker John Boehner is giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, saying he will “wait and listen to what the president has to outline,” Politico reports.

After a meeting with House Republicans, Boehner said he will seek compromise with the president. “What is it that we can agree on? We know that the two parties aren’t going to agree on everything. But the American people want us to find common ground, and I’ll be looking for it.”

Some of Obama’s expected proposals would seem to be acceptable to Republicans, such as
continuing the payroll tax cut and other tax reductions.
