Coburn Says He Doesn’t Expect ‘Gang of Six’ to Get Deficit Deal
Tuesday, 17 May 2011 04:14 PM EDT
A bipartisan “Gang of Six” senators is unlikely to reach agreement on a proposal to reduce the U.S. government’s long-term deficits, Senator Tom Coburn said today.
Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican who is a member of the group, said his colleagues remain “just too far apart on basic issues.”
The group has been working behind closed doors for months trying to find an agreement on a combination of tax increases and spending cuts to reduce the deficit. A separate group of lawmakers led by Vice President Joe Biden is also working to develop its own deficit-reduction plan.
