Illinois Officials Drawing Up Blagojevich Impeachment

By    |   Monday, 15 December 2008 09:40 AM EST

Incoming Illinois Senate President John Cullerton is sequestered in private meetings this morning with 14 attorneys and constitutional law experts, preparing a draft of impeachment articles to oust beleaguered Gov. Rod Blagojevich, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The word of the early morning session comes as insiders express doubt that any impeachment effort of Blagojevich could pass the Illinois House and Senate. Separate efforts by state Attorney General Lisa Madigan to have Blagojevich removed by the Illinois Supreme Court are also seen has highly unlikely, the sources said.

The LA Times is reporting that Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago, who has been Blagojevich's closest legislative ally for quite some time, and Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, have called the Legislature back to the Illinois capitol to vote on a bill to place the decision on Obama's US senate successor into the hands of voters with a special election.

Blagojevich was arrested last week on charges of conspiracy to swap political favors for cash, including an attempt to sell the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barack Obama following his November presidential election victory.

The charges against Blagojevich come after years of investigation detailed by court-approved wiretaps.
