Biden: No Veto Threat on Spending Bill with Pork

Sunday, 19 December 2010 09:26 AM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says President Barack Obama would sign a congressional spending measure even if contains lawmakers' pet projects.

Biden says the president will look at the proportion of those projects — known as earmarks — in a bill to keep the government running into early next year.

But Biden tells NBC's "Meet the Press' that Obama won't veto the bill simply because it contains earmarks, especially if a veto would jeopardize troop safety.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid abandoned a spending bill on Thursday that was stuffed with more than $8 billion in earmarks. He acted after several Republicans who had been thinking of voting for it pulled back their support. The bill included $158 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
