Baucus Fends Off Democrat Revolt on Healthcare

Monday, 21 September 2009 03:19 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Senate aides say that Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus is changing his healthcare bill to make insurance premiums more affordable after fellow Democrats raised concerns.

The Montana Democrat is making the modifications ahead of a committee meeting set to begin Tuesday to amend and vote on the bill.

He'll go over the changes with fellow committee Democrats Monday evening.

Senate Democrats are concerned that the required health insurance under Baucus' bill wouldn't be affordable for low-income people. They also fear that a new tax on high-value insurance plans could hit middle-class workers.

Baucus' legislation is the most conservative, and cheapest, of five healthcare bills in Congress.
