WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker John
Boehner Monday said that any deal to raise the country's
debt ceiling must include spending cuts that exceed the amount
of new borrowing authority.
Boehner, a Republican, said in prepared remarks that tax
hikes could not be a part of the solution to get the country's
debt to a sustainable level, but everything else should be up
for discussion -- including a controversial plan to overhaul
the Medicare health-insurance program for the elderly.
