Giuliana and Bill Rancic have been dealt another devastating blow in their family planning. Giuliana told People that the couple learned on New Year's Eve that the surrogate who was carrying their third and final embryo suffered a miscarriage.

"It was painful," Rancic said, Yahoo.com reports. "We were so optimistic with this last embryo. We thought, 'This is definitely going to work. This is our last shot.' "

Giuliana elected to freeze four embryos when she was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago.

The first resulted in a successful pregnancy; the couple's son Duke was born via surrogate in 2012. Two more eggs were implanted in a surrogate in 2014, but she miscarried. Rancic calls this latest loss "the toughest blow."
