Naps Improve Frustration Tolerance: Study

Friday, 10 July 2015 01:24 PM EDT

Easily frustrated or impulsive? Maybe you need to take a nap. That’s the upshot of new research showing a short nap can reduce impulsive behavior and improve the ability to withstand frustration, The New York Times reports.

The findings, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, are based on studies involving 40 people aged 18 to 50 who given tests of frustration tolerance — which consisted of trying to complete an impossible task — and surveyed on sleepiness, mood and impulsivity.

Then they were randomly assigned to take an hour’s nap, or to watch a nature video. The results indicated nappers spent more time trying to solve the tasks (indicating better tolerance of frustration) than before getting some sleep.

Non-nappers also gave up on the tasks sooner and rated their behavior as more impulsive than nappers.

“These results are valuable and have put us on the route to understanding how we can utilize naps,” said lead researcher Jennifer R. Goldschmied, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan. “Now people are starting to understand how powerful short bursts of sleep can be.”
