FDA: Sex Pills Contain Undeclared Ingredients

By    |   Thursday, 31 October 2013 03:51 PM EDT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to purchase a handful of products sold as sex-enhancement pills for men because they contain unapproved and undeclared amounts of the active ingredient in the prescription erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis.

The FDA pills in question include Xzen 1200, Xzen Gold, or Xzen XPress products that have been promoted and sold for sexual enhancement on various websites and in some retail stores.

FDA lab tests showed Xzen 1200 contains tadalafil (Cialis). Xzen Gold and Xzen Press contain both tadalafil and sildenafil (Viagra). Both Cialis and Viagra are used to treat erectile dysfunction, while the Xzen products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building, and are often represented as being “all natural,” FDA officials said.

Health experts noted the undeclared ingredients can interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs — such as nitroglycerin, used to treat chest pain — and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.

The FDA recommends that consumers who purchased such products stop using them and throw them away immediately. Anyone who may have experienced any negative side effects are advised to consult a healthcare professional.
