Every summer since 1987, thousands of people have traveled from Michigan to Alabama along U.S. Route 127 to attend what’s been dubbed the World’s Longest Yard Sale. Vendors from all over the country set up their stands along the 690-mile route that stretches from Addison, Michigan, to Gadsden, Alabama.

Promoters were thinking of canceling the event this year because of the pandemic, according to ABC News, but they decided to move forward making sure that public precautions such as social distancing and wearing masks were in place.

“The fact that it’s a mostly outdoor event was a large determining factor in going forward,” said Josh Randall, a spokesperson for the event, which is also called the 127 Yard Sale. “There’s plenty of space for social distancing and the other guidelines can be followed as well. In addition, because this event is critical to many people’s livelihood, it’s very important.”

Their website has updated information on COVID-19 including directives to vendors to follow state and local guidelines for the event, including physical distancing and wearing masks.

The Northern Kentucky Health Department added that vendors should also keep hand sanitizers on their tables and encourage buyers not to handle anything they’re not going to purchase, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Some places chose not to participate because of the virus, but the six-state yard sale that started Thursday is going strong this weekend as customers and vendors continue to haggle over the prices of old Coca Cola bottles, clothes, toys and much more, according to ABC News.
