A virtual colonoscopy does more than just detect colorectal cancer — it can also spot cancers outside of the colon, according to a new study reported by the American College of Radiology/American Roentgen Ray Society. Virtual colonoscopy, which is less invasive than traditional colonoscopy, says HealthDay, gives doctors a peek at the entire abdomen and pelvis in addition to the inside of the colon.
In regard to finding lesions outside of the colon, a virtual colonoscopy "increased the odds of identifying high-risk lesions by 78 percent," according to study author Dr. Ganesh Veerappan.
