Do you ever wish you did not feel tired halfway through the day and had more energy to do all the things on your bucket list? That energy boost is possible, thanks to the help of a new supplement.

"Wow, I'm really back on my game — it's amazing."

That is a common reaction among people who take the supplement for a few weeks, says Fred Pescatore, M.D., an integrative physician in New York, N.Y., and author of The A-List Diet. Seventeen studies support the supplement's efficacy.

Called Robuvit, the supplement is an extract from the wood of a French oak tree. For hundreds of years, Europeans have made a medicinal tea from the bark of this tree, to treat fevers and other ailments, and barrels made from the tree have been used to age wine. It is believed beneficial substances seep from the wood into the wine, enhancing its health benefits.

The supplement is made by extracting the active ingredients from the wood.

"It's an all-natural alternative to overcome general fatigue and increase everyday energy," Pescatore tells Health Radar.

Other benefits, documented in studies, include relief from many symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome; repair of liver damage from toxins; faster recovery from intense physical activity such as sports; and faster recovery from the flu.

Like many plant extracts, Robuvit is an antioxidant but it also has another, special quality. It is the only known source of plant chemicals called roburins. These improve energy production in every cell in a unique way.

More specifically, each cell contains mitochondria, tiny energy-generating components. Roburins help mitochondria use fuel more efficiently, explains Pescatore, enhancing energy production on a basic, cellular level. Working this way, Robuvit does not act as a stimulant. It will not keep you up at night like caffeine and might even help you sleep better.

One study looked at 40 middle-aged people complaining of fatigue, mood problems, and insomnia. All study participants followed an eight-week lifestyle program, including limiting caffeine, gentle exercise, not eating late in the evening, and not using an electronic device before bedtime.

Half also took Robuvit each day. Compared to the lifestyle-only group, those taking Robuvit experienced a much greater reduction of all their symptoms.

A study of people with chronic fatigue syndrome found that Robuvit supplements, taken daily for eight weeks, produced significant improvements in weakness, exhaustion, unrefreshing sleep, pain in muscles and joints, headaches, tenderness, noise sensitivity, dizziness, depression, mood swings, weight gain, allergies, and vision disturbances.

One study tested Robuvit, taken daily for 12 weeks, in a group of people with measurable, temporary liver damage from drinking alcohol. Researchers found that it lowered harmful liver enzymes, relieved tiredness and nausea, and reduced the size of an enlarged liver.

In addition to studying the research and using Robuvit with patients, Pescatore takes it daily. He says it makes a big difference in his weekly exercise regimen, which includes bicycling 70 to 80 miles and taking two trapeze classes — at the age of 57.

Robuvit is a patented extract that is available in multiple brands of supplements. It is best taken with food. There are no known interactions with prescription or over-the-counter medications, but anyone with kidney disease should always check with their doctor before taking any supplement. Robuvit has not been tested in pregnant women.

Pescatore recommends taking the daily dose of Robuvit used in all studies: 300 mg.

  • To enhance your natural energy production: Take it daily and allow a couple of weeks for benefits to become noticeable.
  • To speed recovery from the flu: Start taking Robuvit at the first sign of a sniffle or other symptom.
  • To recover more quickly from intense exercise: Start taking the supplement a few days before a workout or sports activity.
