When the pandemic hit last spring, 64% of Americans began stockpiling according to new research. A data technology service, Inmar Intelligence, found that 57% of shoppers today are considering replenishing their stock due to fears of a second wave of COVID-19.
According to FOX Business, hygiene products still top the must-have list, with 67% stocking up on toilet paper and 57% grabbing hand sanitizer. Canned goods, disinfectant wipes, and paper towels are also in high demand to prepare for the potential second wave. But the new survey found that current consumers are also buying frozen dinners, pastas, snacks, and cleaning products unlike shoppers last spring.
The firm added that 55% of Americans plan to purchase goods in a store, rather than online, “suggesting that brick and mortar retailers are still crucial for consumers when purchasing everyday items,” said the firm.
A second poll from Sports and Leisure Research Group reported similar shopping patterns. Fear of a resurgent pandemic that may cause more restrictions for businesses is driving people to stockpile, but anxiety over the upcoming election is also a factor, said Jon Last, president of the group. “We still see a majority of Americans are concerned that we will see more spikes in COVID, and it’s beginning to rear its head in a number of states.”
According to USA Today, grocery chains are stocking their shelves to ensure they can meet the demand as COVID-19 cases soar and holiday shopping begins. Experts add that as millions of children and adults still work and study from home, the demand for home-cooked meals, snacks, and other supplies is stronger than ever.
