While Americans continue to avoid large crowds and social gatherings, almost 3 out of 10 said they are ready to get "back to normal" right away. Most of us, according to a recent survey, are still wary of resuming pre-pandemic daily activities but are increasingly easing out of isolation.

According to a new Gallup poll conducted during the week ending May 31, Americans' avoidance of small gatherings, such as mingling with friends and family, declined by 6%. In the beginning of April, a full 84% said they were staying away from get-togethers.

But according to Gallup, the majority of us are still avoiding traveling and visiting restaurants and other public places. And 83% continue to wear face masks. On the other hand, 23% of those polled said they are "isolating themselves a little or making no attempt."

The Conversation warned that easing lockdowns does not mean a return to pre-pandemic normality. People must still adhere to social distancing rules to mitigate a new outbreak of the coronavirus. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson even introduced a plan to levy fines on those who violated those rules.

While more Americans are dipping their toes into social waters by attending small gatherings of friends and family, half of those polled consistently said they are "very or moderately worried about a lack of social distancing in their area."

Gallup pollsters concluded that Americans are "still social distancing but are doing it a bit differently than in the first month of the crisis." In the early days of the pandemic, people avoided any social contact with members outside their immediate household. Today, the biggest change is that they are renewing visits with friends and family. The good news is that 8 out of 10 Americans reported that they are responsibly wearing masks in public.
