Sex experts say intercourse lasts from 3-13 minutes for American couples, but many want it to go longer. Now, advances in the field of sex therapy have led to ways to making that a reality.

"In the field of sex therapy, we no longer regard sex as an act, but rather as an experience," Dr. Judy Kuriansky, Ph.D. a leading psychologist and author of "The Complete Idiot’s Guide to a Healthy Relationship," tells Newsmax.

"It's important to include the buildup and the aftermath as part of the sexuality involved in intimacy. Sex, like any form of exercise, helps build energy and stamina. So, after a brief rest period, use the renewed energy to get creative with your partner."

Here are some tips on how to build sexual stamina.

  • Experiment with making love at different times of the day. "A little afternoon delight instead of reserving sex for nighttime may make a difference," Kuriansky said. "Experiment with different times and locations."
  • Take magnesium. Dr. Jamie Turndorf, aka "Dr. Love," tells Newsmax too much stress plays a role in handicapping our sexuality and too little magnesium restricts blood flow and energy. "Adding magnesium helps reduce anxiety and stress while improving blood flow throughout the body. I recommend using the transdermal patch for maximum absorption."
  • Eat chili peppers. Get your mojo on by including peppers in your diet. "Peppers contain capsaicin that increase heart rate and stimulates arousal," Kuriansky said.
  • Eat an apple a day. According to Eat This, Not That, apples contain high levels of quercetin which can increase sexual stamina. This antioxidant has been found to improve physical endurance.
  • Act ginger-ly. This delicious spice helps circulation and increases blood flow to every organ of the body. According to HubPages, ginger has been used since 500 B.C. for many health benefits and is considered a miracle food for sexual performance. Add grated ginger to your soups and stews or steeped in tea.
  • Enjoy watermelon. This popular fruit is rich in L-citrulline, an amino acid that converts to L-arginine in the body. According to  Eat This, Not That, L-arginine works like that famous little blue pill, stimulating the production of nitric oxide which increases blood flow to the penis.
  • Have a banana. These fruits are rich in potassium and energy to boost sexual stamina. The American Heart Association says bananas help lower blood pressure, which can help sexual performance by aiding blood flow throughout the body.
