Prayer Boosts Self-Control: Study

Saturday, 30 November 2013 10:07 AM EST

Prayer gives people more self-control and helps them keep their emotions in check, according to a new German study.

People turn to prayer "as a coping response to the high demands in life" and are rewarded with increased strength and ability to resist temptation, researchers at Saarland University and the University of Mannheim said.
The latest study found that praying helps people maintain self-control when they are stressed, reports the London Daily Mail.

"A brief period of personal prayer buffered the self-control depletion effect," wrote the team, whose findings are published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology online.
