Pet Health Insurance: Is It Worth It?

Friday, 10 April 2015 02:35 PM EDT

Healthcare costs for Fido or Fluffy can rival those for human patients. But is pet health insurance the way to go?

Consumer advocates say numerous factors should be taken into consideration, if you’re thinking about going with a pet insurance policy, Fox News reports in an analysis of the pros and cons.

For instance, certain breeds have higher health risks and may cost too much to insure. Others may be prone to costly healthy chronic conditions that would be best handled by insurance.

The bottom line: Pet insurance is not for everyone. If you are able to afford hundreds or even thousands of dollars of pet care, you may not need pet insurance. On the other hand, if you would pay whatever it costs to treat a sick pet, you may want to consider insurance.
