Heartburn is the bane of millions of Americans. About 60 million report they have heartburn at least once a month and as many as 15 million experience symptoms once a day, according to the American College of Gastroenterology.

However, recent studies show that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are commonly prescribed to fight heartburn and acid reflux, may have a deadly influence on health. Studies show PPIs increase the risk of heart attacks, cancer, fractures, kidney damage — and the list of dangers keeps growing.

But what are those millions of daily sufferers to do? Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to help manage the condition safely, not just suppress symptoms like PPIs, says neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of The Blaylock Wellness Report.

"It is critically important to chew your food well, which means chewing until the food is a soft mush," said Blaylock, author of Dr. Blaylock's Prescriptions for Natural Health. "Also, avoid large meals and eating close to bedtime. It is important to avoid lying down after a meal — wait at least two hours — and lie on your right side."

Your problem may actually not be too much stomach acid, but not enough. Blaylock says that the key to overcoming reflux is to increase, not decrease, the amount of stomach acid after a meal. "This may seen counterintuitive, but studies have shown that low stomach acid is more common with acid reflux disease than high levels."

Symptoms of low levels of stomach acid, which become more common with age, include heartburn, indigestion, and bloating. One study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found that 30 percent of men and women over the age of 60 produced little or no gastric acid.

In cases of low stomach acid, you feel a burning sensation because undigested food moves into the lower esophagus, and even though the acid level is low, it's high enough to burn sensitive tissue and cause discomfort.

Blaylock recommends three inexpensive, easy ways to boost stomach acid:

• Drink a tablespoon of pickle juice with each meal.

• Drink a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar added to four ounces of water with each meal.

• Take two apple cider vinegar capsules before each meal.

Other natural products include:

• DGL: Short for deglycyrrhizinated licorice, DGL works by coating and soothing the lower esophagus. DGL comes in capsules or in chewable tablets. One compound in licorice called glycyrrhizin can increase blood pressure, but it has been removed in DGL. Blaylock recommends emptying the contents of two capsules into four ounces of water and drinking it between meals. In addition to treating the symptoms of heartburn, clinical studies have found DGL to be more effective than Tagamet, Zantac, or antacids to treat peptic ulcers.

• Chewing gum. Chewing gum increases normal saliva production up to nine times, and helps reduce the burning caused by stomach acid. Instead of sugared gum or those with artificial sweeteners, Blaylock recommends mastic gum, a resin from the mastic tree that has been used for gastrointestinal ailments by the Greeks for thousands of years. It's also called Arabic gum and can be found in health stores and pharmacies.

• Betaine hydrochloric acid (HCL). You can also increase the production of stomach acid by taking Betaine HCL, which can be found in health food stores. Blaylock suggests taking one or two tablets at the beginning of each meal. Continue to increase the dose until you feel a warm sensation in your stomach. Warmth means you've taken too many, so cut back one tablet at the next meal. (Those with active ulcers or gastritis should avoid Betaine HCL.)
