As we age we being to notice symptoms that can be troublesome and even disturbing. We don't feel as energetic and sexy as we used to and our libido is low. Suzy Cohen, Rph, nicknamed "America's most trusted pharmacist," believes in treating the symptoms of menopause for women and andropause for men naturally.
"Women may experience fatigue, forgetfulness, hot flashes, vaginal discomfort, irritability, and insomnia," she says. "Men may also experience fatigue, reduced sex drive, weak erections, depression, as well as loss of strength and muscle mass."
Cohen suggests these lifestyle changes to help deal with the symptoms of hormonal changes as a couple:
- Manage stressful situations. "This tops my list because when you experience runaway stress, your body produces the hormone cortisol instead of estrogen and testosterone," she says. "You're trading sex hormones for stress hormones." She suggests staying away from negative people and setting boundaries. Avoid potentially stressful situations.
- Avoid estrogenic chemicals. This means avoiding pesticide-laden foods that contain unnatural estrogen, which throws off your hormone balance. Plastic water bottles are also culprits of fake hormones, as are certain soaps and cosmetics. Buy organic foods whenever possible.
- Maintain a healthy sex life. Cohen suggests that unless there is a medical condition that prevents you from enjoying intimacy, make it a scheduled priority. For women, natural estrogen or bio-identical creams can help with vaginal dryness, and both men and women need to lead a healthy lifestyle that keeps their adrenal function optimal.
- Watch what you eat. "Eating cheeseburgers and delivery pizzas every day or two is not good for your sex drive," says Cohen. "Instead, choose lean meats, salads, vegetables, and fruit, and take it easy on the grains." She recommends trading soda for lemon water and avoiding "fake" milk, like soy or almond milk.
- Sip green tea. Both green tea and matcha tea have catechins, which offer natural antioxidant protection and fight free radicals.
- Exercise. Exercising regularly gets your blood flowing and that means more sexual appetite. Routine exercise, says Cohen, increases flexibility, as well as the release of endorphins like serotonin, dopamine, and endocannabinoids. These neurotransmitters fight the depression that often accompanies menopause and andropause.
- Try ashwagandha. This natural herb that's been around for thousands of years is said to help with stress, anxiety, insomnia, as well as sexual problems. It also helps support thyroid health and fertility.
- Rest. Find time during the day to take a few minutes to close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and step away from electronic devices. This helps to reduce the level of stress hormones that actually deplete testosterone levels. Get a massage to help reduce stress and keep your adrenal glands healthy. "If you don't take care of yourself, then your health status as well as your sex life may decline," says Cohen.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol. According to a recent Mayo Clinic study, excess caffeine consumption not only lowers testosterone levels, but it also seems to increase the likelihood of hot flashes in women. Too much also lowers testosterone levels.
