The brains of people who are musicians work slightly faster than do others, which seems to translate into better memory, a study finds.
It has been established by previous research that musicians process linguistic materials more quickly than others. Scientists at the University of Texas at Arlington researchers took an electronic peek inside the brains of both musicians and non-musicians to learn more.
They administered memory tests to 14 musicians and 15 non-musicians while using electroencephalography (EEG) technology to track the electrical activity within their brains.
To test working memory, the study participants were asked to select pictorial or verbal items that they'd just been given. To test their memory, participants were asked to judge whether they had seen each item previously.
The results showed that the musicians were not only faster at recalling the item, but more accurate.
