With a second wave of the coronavirus possible this fall, a fully stocked medicine chest is one the best ways to ensure you’ll be prepared for COVID-19 or any illness that may strike in the future.
During the early days of the current pandemic, store shelves were stripped of many essential items like thermometers. Now it the time to check your supplies and replenish what’s needed.
According to CNN, here’s what you should have on hand:
- Thermometer. Dr. Gary LeRoy, the president of the American Academy of Family Physicians told CNN that since a fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit is a hallmark symptom of COVID-19, it’s important to have a thermometer on hand and to take your temperature first, before taking medication to reduce pain or fever.
- Cough drops or cough syrup to reduce coughing symptoms.
- Acetaminophen to reduce fever and muscle aches.
- Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory that also reduces pain and fever but should be used with caution if you have gastrointestinal issues, LeRoy told CNN.
- Antidiarrheal medicine to treat another common COVID-19 symptom.
- Face masks are crucial. According to CNN, keep several throughout the house and in the car. Have extras for visitors, said LeRoy.
- Alcohol-based sanitizers and sanitizing wipes flew off the shelves during the early days of the pandemic. Stock up now.
- Latex gloves should also be strategically placed throughout the home and automobile.
According to Good Housekeeping, those taking prescriptions medicines should keep a 30-60 day supply on hand. The American Red Cross recommends having over-the-counter medicines such as cough and cold medicines, stomach remedies, and allergy treatments if needed. Stock up on multivitamins, too.
