The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has given its stamp of approval to two Lysol products for use in eradicating the coronavirus on hard, nonporous surfaces.

Both Lysol Disinfectant and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist got the nod based on laboratory testing that showed the products killed SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in two minutes.

According to CNN, although the EPA has published a list of over 400 disinfectant products that ward off the virus, the two Lysol products are the first to be tested directly against the virus and proven to be effective.

“In the face of the pandemic, Lysol continues to work with a wide range of scientific and health experts to educate the public on the importance of hygiene,” said Rahul Kadyan, executive vice president of Reckitt Benckiser in North America, Lysol’s parent company.

In late April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued warnings on how to clean surfaces safely after a survey found that many people were using chemicals in potentially dangerous ways while trying to disinfect their homes and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
