Washington D.C. is the healthiest city in America, a new survey shows. The ranking displaces Minneapolis-St. Paul, which placed No. 2 after holding the top spot for three straight years.
The findings are among the American College of Sports Medicine's 2014 report ranking the healthiest metropolitan areas in America, based on an assessment of specific measures of how well a city serves the recreational health and fitness needs of its residents,
Forbes reports.
More than 80 percent of people the nation’s Capital did some kind of physical activity in the last 30 days and fewer than 22 percent are obese. Residents’ rates of heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and general health are also important.
“The [report] is a snapshot of the state of health in the community and an evaluation of the infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles,” said Walter Thompson, chair of the advisory board for the organization.
