We have a major opportunity to improve the health of our children, first lady Michelle Obama wrote in an op-ed piece for the Washington Post. The Child Nutrition Bill is winding its way through Congress, garnering support from both Democrats and Republicans. Once law, it will bring essential changes to the federal school lunch program.
First, the bill will increase the nutritional standards schools have to meet — more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while reducing fat and salt. Schools that meet the new standards will be rewarded. Second, it will encourage schools to remove junk foods from vending machines.
Urging fast passage of the new law, Obama wrote that children, parents, schools, and the country will benefit from the bill.
