Google Posts Nutritional Info for 1,000 Foods

Friday, 31 May 2013 03:56 PM EDT

Google’s search version of Siri, Apple’s intelligent personal assistant, has rolled out a new feature that provides the nutritional content for about 1,000 different foods.

Want to know how calorific your chow mein dinner really is? Like Siri, tap the microphone icon on the Google Search app, ask the question — "how many calories in chow mein" — and in a voice remarkably similar to Apple’s PA, you’ll get an immediate reply.

The initial launch phase of the app’s enhanced voice search provides nutritional profiles for 1,000 fruits, vegetables, meats and meals which can help calorie-conscious consumers and dieters build low-carb and low-calorie meals.

Questions can range from "how much protein in a banana?" to "how many carbs in corn?"

According to Google Search’s official blog, the new feature debuted in English across the U.S. this week and will continue rolling out over the next 10 days.

Over time, more features, foods and languages will be added.
