Is Fruit Juice More Damaging to Health Than Soda?

Fruit juice might seem like a healthy choice. But according to obesity expert Robert Lustig, the high sugar content in many commercial fruit juices makes it at least as unhealthy as soda.

Lustig is the author of "Fat Chance: The Bitter Truth About Sugar," tells The Telegraph sugar is the major culprit in the obesity crisis and that juices are a primary source.
 
"Calorie for calorie, 100 percent orange juice is worse for you" than sugary sodas, Lustig says. Case studies from Lustig's childhood obesity clinic in San Francisco reveal many overweight children are big fruit juice drinkers.
 
Over the past 30 years consumption of fructose — the sugar in juice —has more than doubled. A typical children's juice box contains about 17 grams of sugar, the equivalent of more than four teaspoons.
