Florida mom Carla Grivna says her daughter was healthy and happy until she got a flu shot just before Thanksgiving last year. Three days later, nine-year-old Marysue couldn't move or talk. Almost a year later, she's bedridden and paralyzed with a rare infection of the brain called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis or ADEM that her mom thinks is the result of her annual flu vaccination.
"The doctors won't confirm or deny it," Grivna told "Fox & Friends." "Her father Steven and I are certain, due to all of our research, that this was what caused Marysue's condition. She was a happy, healthy, running and playing 9-year-old, then this happened."
Grivna stressed that her daughter was healthy and had no underlying medical condition. Marysue underwent numerous tests at the hospital to try to find what had caused her condition, but "they could not find anything."
Although Dr. Juan Dumois told Tampa's WTSP-TV that the flu shot could have caused Marysue's illness, he believes that it's more likely to get ADEM from the flu itself rather than the vaccine used to prevent flu.
Grivna said parents should be educated before giving their children an annual flu shot. "Be informed and make an informed decision with your doctor's guidance," she told "Fox & Friends."
