A Mexico-based company is selling potentially dangerous hand sanitizers that may contain toxic chemicals. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that products manufactured by Eskbiochem SA de CV may contain methanol, aka wood alcohol, which can be poisonous if absorbed through the skin or ingested.

According to Fox Business Network, the products involved are:

  • All-Clean Hand Sanitizer
  • Esk Biochem Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 70% Alcohol
  • Lavar 70 Gel Hand Sanitizer
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 80% Alcohol
  • CleanCare NoGerm Advanced Hand Sanitizer 70% Alcohol
  • Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer

The FDA said that methanol should not be used in hand sanitizers because of its toxicity and that consumers are urged to seek immediate medical attention of they have come into contact with any of these products.

"Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning," the FDA said.

Some of the serous side effects and complications of methanol poisoning include nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, and death, according to Fox Business.

Dispose of these products safety if you have them in your home but do not pour them down the drain, Fox noted. Although the FDA asked the company to remove its products on June 17, to date it has not done so.
