A Japanese company has developed a high-tech face mask that translates what the wearer says into eight languages. The white plastic face mask still offers protection against COVID-19, but is capable of translating speech from Japanese into Vietnamese, English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian and French.
According to the Evening Standard, the c-mask works with a smartphone app via Bluetooth technology and not only translates words into text messages, but also dictates speech and makes calls.
According to the Robb Report, the c-mask was developed thanks to the coronavirus outbreak when maker Donut Robotics’ engineers turned their talent into producing a product that would help their financial viability during the pandemic. It fits over a standard cloth mask.
“We worked hard for years to develop a robot and we have used that technology to create a product that responds to how the coronavirus has reshaped society,” said Taisuke Ono, Donut Robotics’ chief executive officer.
The first 5,000 masks will be available to Japanese buyers in September before the company expands its marketing to China, the U.S. and Europe. The estimated cost for the multilingual mask is $40.
