Germ-Killing Robots Deployed to Liberia to Battle Ebola

Tuesday, 26 August 2014 04:35 PM EDT

Two robotic devices that can disinfect a room by flooding it with a special kind of light have been sent from the U.S. to Liberia to help in the fight against the deadly Ebola virus.

The robots, known as TRU-D SmartUVC, use a dose of UV light that is lethal to disease-causing microbes, making a room 99.9 percent germ free. Before the device is activated, people must leave the room.

Dr. Jeffery L. Deal, TRU-D’s inventor, is traveling with the units to train hospital staff in Monrovia, Liberia, to use them.

"We developed TRU-D SmarUVC technology to combat the devastating effects of hospital-acquired infection,” Deal says. “Unlike many diseases, Ebola strikes hospital workers more than any other group, making it the ultimate hospital-acquired infection.”

The robots will be left behind in Monrovia so that they can be used in Liberia long-term, Deal said.
