Dr. Mehmet Oz is advising the public to keep calm and to stop hoarding toilet paper and other items amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The TV personality was responding to the emptying shelves in stores throughout the U.S., and the world. Oz was shopping on Saturday when he discovered toilet paper was sold out. In response, he whipped out his phone and snapped a photo of the bare scene, which he uploaded to Facebook.
"Why we buy out toilet paper is something I’ll never understand. Humans are hearty bunch. We’ve fixed problems far under the sea and on the face of the moon," Oz wrote, questioning why people still panicked then bought "more toilet paper than we can possibly fit in our carts and cars."
The health expert offered advice to his followers.
"(1) Don’t panic — keep your distance from people, and if you feel sick, stay home. (2) Buy the essentials for two weeks, no more. Leave supplies for everyone else. (3) Trust in the fact that if you somehow run out of toilet paper, a friendly neighbor would find a way to safely deliver you some."
Oz pointed out that if there was absolutely no toilet paper around, "our ancestors survived without TP."
"This is my way of telling you to stay calm and keep your head down. We’ve faced plenty of challenges before, and we’ll figure this one out too," he concluded.
Stores are struggling to replace stocks as shelves empty and shoppers grow increasingly anxious. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon addressed the issue during a White House conference held Friday. He explained that there was a shortage of essential items because of a stressed supply chain, NBC News reported.
"All the retailers have been working hand in hand with the suppliers to bring that to the markets as fast as we can," he said.
Supplies were being rerouted to the areas that were most in need and retailers are allowing managers to restrict the number of items each customer may buy.
