People living with diabetes need to be mindful of what they are putting in their bodies in order to keep blood glucose levels in a safe range. And in the summer, when everyone’s splurging on ice cream and other sweet treats, it is especially challenging to stay within safe limits.

“People with diabetes can still enjoy a sweet treat on occasion when their blood sugar levels are well controlled,” Melissa Matteo, MSRD, a certified diabetes instructor and registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic tells Newsmax Health. “Try to keep portions small and limited to 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrate per serving.”

Here are some refreshing diabetes friendly dessert ideas:

*Berries. Dr. Karin Hehenberger, an expert on diabetes who also suffers from type 1 diabetes herself, recommends berries to people with diabetes, especially blueberries. They are low in sugar, but high in fiber and anti-oxidants. They can be served as is, or with whipped cream. They also can be frozen and pureed with water and a little sugar or sugar substitute to make a granita. Or freeze the puree and make your own popsicles.

*Sugar-Free Popsicles such as Popsicle’s Sugar-free Ice Pops contain only 4 grams of carbohydrates per pop and come in classic flavors like cherry, orange, grape as well as tropical flavors such as pineapple and fruit punch.

*Serve cold melon soup for dessert. Whirl cantaloupe chunks with a little peeled ginger in a blender or food processor and serve cold, garnished with mint leaves. This low-calorie treat has only 11.3 grams of carbs per serving.

*Low-calorie ice cream can make a special treat but often lacks taste and texture. But according to experts, Halo Top creamery — an upstart company that’s outselling Ben and Jerry’s  — offers a delicious low-calorie, high-protein, low-sugar product. The most calorific flavor is just 90 calories and has 16 grams of carbs. Halo Top also boasts an impressive line of flavors, from classics like chocolate and vanilla, to fun ones like birthday cake and chocolate mocha chip.

*Frozen yogurt treats like Greek yogurt pops and sandwiches are the newest offering from Yasso, a company that claims to deliver “dessert with benefits.” You can enjoy a traditional style yogurt-based ice cream sandwich with only 20 grams of carbs. The flavors are mouth watering and include mint chocolate chip, s’mores, cookies ‘n cream and chocolate sea salt caramel. All are gluten free.

*Banana Walnut Ice Cream. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of The End of Diabetes, makes this treat for his children. He mixes frozen bananas with enough soy or almond milk to blend and a few walnuts for texture in a high speed blender. This DIY treat has 30 carbs per serving.

*Banana Babies. These scrumptious treats made by Diana are dubbed “the world’s best chocolate-dipped frozen treat.” At only 18 carbs a piece, they are not only diabetic-friendly but also boast a boost of potassium from the bananas.

*So Delicious Minis Vanilla Soymilk Sandwiches. For the ice cream sandwich lovers, try these low-calorie frozen snacks with only 17 carbs per soy-based sandwich.

*Snickers Minis Ice Cream Bars. Here’s another crowd and kid pleaser that has just 9 carbs per piece even with the ooey-gooey combo of peanuts, caramel, chocolate and ice cream.

“Keep in mind that desserts should be enjoyed in moderation by everyone, not only people with diabetes,” Hehenberger says. “It’s better to have a small but delicious treat — like a piece of chocolate or biscotti with your espresso — after a  healthy but satisfying lunch or dinner.”
