Everyone is eager to get away this summer but in many areas of the U.S., COVID-19 infection rates are on the rise. Experts say that if you are planning to rent a vacation home, it's important to make sure the property has strict cleaning protocols and that there are no travel restrictions in the area.
Some states or local governments have instituted travel restrictions, and Kayak has compiled a list. Some rental platforms such as VRBO will also alert you if you are planning to visit an area with mandates, according to HerMoney.
Experts say that if you are traveling with another family, think twice before expanding your "isolation bubble." Dr. Andrew Janowski said, "When leaving your own isolation bubble, how will you come into contact with others and what ways can you protect yourself?" That advice is especially true if someone in your family is in the high-risk group.
Experts told HerMoney that one of the ways to ensure your safety while renting a summer home is to ask the host how much time elapses between the time the last guest leaves and your arrival. Janowski said that if the property has been empty for days, your risk of infection is "virtually zero."
Choose rentals that aren't on a shared property and offer contact-free check-in, said the expert. If the property was occupied within 24 hours, even if the owner or management company had a cleaning service come in, be sure to sanitize all surfaces.
Also, check the cancellation policy. In uncertain times, travel restrictions or other impediments may arise that force you to cancel your plans. VRBO told HerMoney that managers and owners have expanded their cancellation options during the pandemic. According to Business Insider, Airbnb is offering full refunds and no cancellation fees to customers around the world if COVID-19 disrupts their travel plans.
